SoFi (South of Fifth Street)

SoFi is “south of Fifth Street” in Miami’s South Beach. There is also a SoFi in New York City.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Beach
South Beach (also known as SoBe) is a section of Miami Beach, Florida that encompasses the lower 23 blocks of the island from the point south of 1st Street to 23rd Street. This area was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed starting in the 1910s, thanks to development efforts of Carl G. Fisher, the Lummus Brothers, John Collins, and others.

There are several residential neighborhoods in South Beach. South of Fifth (also known as SoFi) encompasses the area from the Atlantic ocean east to Biscayne Bay on the west, and from Fifth Street to the South Pointe. As of 2005, it has Miami Beach’s highest property values. Although mostly residential, the area is also home to several large scale development projects and large buildings such as the Portofino and sister buildings such as Icon (spearheaded by designer Philippe Starck).

BIG PINK IS NEMO’S COMFORTABLE, MORE CASUAL SISTER
Big money is pouring into the South Beach district below Fifth Street, SoFi to the smart set. Mega-condo projects—some sprawling over blocks, others casting long shadows over them—are imposing urban renewal, and the various modeling agencies, restaurants and nightclubs that have opened shop in the area are cashing in.. Surely Nemo is one of the great SoFi culinary success stories: a bustling, New Yorky spot with an open kitchen out of which chef Michael Schwartz produces highly…

12 January 2003, New York Times, “What’s Doing In: Miami” by Pamela Robin Brandt, pg. TR14:
In Miami Beach’s newly hot but relatively quiet SoFi (South of Fifth Street) District, the Wave, 350 Ocean Drive South, Miami Beach, (305) 673-0401, fax (305) 674-9634, http://www.wave hotel.com, was the boringly boxy Lord Balfour, built in 1940. Now the interior is all cool curves in blue and gray, from the loungelike lobby to the 66 Italian-custom-furnished rooms (with bedside machines that make the sounds of the ocean, rain or birdsong, among other things). Rates, $159 to $199.

When anyone says “the critics agree,” don’t buy it. Critics usually disagree on the best drama and the worst comedy. Critics don’t even agree on what they saw on their recently concluded press tour in Pasadena, Calif.Glenn Garvin of The Miami Herald set this scene for an appearance by Roger Ailes (left) of Fox News Channel: “About two-thirds of the 150 critics left the room before Ailes took the stage, several of them openly voicing their scorn for what they say is Fox News’ conservative spin."Glenn was on one side of the room, so I can’t confirm what people near him were saying. But the critics near me wanted to hear Ailes because he makes infrequent appearances at the gathering and because Fox News is thriving.
