Quesadilla on Steroids (mulita)

LA Weekly (CA) food critic Janathan Gold described (in a 1999 column) a mulita at La Taquiza as being “a sort of quesadilla on steroids.” A mulita consists of two corn tortillas sandwiching jack cheese, guacamole and meat. Gold’s “quesadilla on steroids” description of a mulita has been repeated often.

La Taquiza No. 2
The best Mexican antojito in Los Angeles may be something called a mulita—a sort of quesadilla on steroids, good enough to make a grown man yelp with joy—at the South-Central restaurant La Taquiza No. 2. Two thick corn tortillas, made seconds earlier, are slapped down on a griddle, glazed with jack cheese and fresh guacamole, sprinkled with a few grams of meat snatched off the fire, then welded together into kind of a sandwich.

I’ve been a fan of La Taquiza for awhile now but all this time I have never tried the mulitas. This is a taco hunt but the mulita is from the same family as the taco.It’s somewhat of a quesadilla/taco hybrid. They grill two fresh corn tortillas and melt cheese on each of them, take some meat and spread some guacamole and some salsa roja and then press the two sides together like a sandwhich. Delicioso! The saltyness of the pork entwined with gooey cheese, the creamy avocado and toasted fresh corn were amazing. Oh my.

El Camión: a truckload of goodness
El Camión, at the edge of a Home Depot parking lot on Aurora Avenue North near North 115th Street, is a great place to grab a quick bite or get a cheap, filling meal for the whole family. It serves familiar taco-truck fare, as well as a few pleasant surprises, such as fresh-grilled fish tacos and tamales wrapped in banana leaves.
