"It was so cold in New York that they canceled the Central Park ice festival” is not just a joke—it really did happen in February 2016. On February 12, 2016, the Central Park Conservancy canceled the annual Central Park Ice Festival that weekend because of extreme cold weather and high winds.

Due to extreme temperatures and high winds the Central Park Ice Festival scheduled for this Saturday, February 13 will be cancelled. It will not be rescheduled.

On Valentine’s Day weekend, celebrate your love of Central Park’s sculptures at our fifth annual free Ice Festival. Witness ice-carving artists from Okamoto Studio use electric chain saws, chisels, and picks to transform more than 6,000 pounds of ice into a glistening replica of one of the Park’s most beloved statues. 

As night falls, revel among colorful lights as the Mall becomes a vibrant silent disco with live DJs, all to celebrate Central Park Conservancy’s preservation efforts.

(NEWSER) – It’s too cold in New York City for the annual Central Park Ice Festival. The Central Park Conservancy says Saturday’s event has been canceled. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the teens on Saturday for New York. But wind chills could drop to between zero and minus-10, and wind gusts could reach around 44mph. The free event was to feature ice-carving artists and music.
