“Thistle” seems to imply the existence of “thattle,” like the words “this” and “that.”
   
“Are you sure that’s a thistle?  Looks more like a thattle to me…” was posted on Twitter by Romeo Vitelli on September 18, 2013. “The existence of a thistle necessarily implies the existence of a thattle as posited by classic rock and roll number ‘thattle be the day.’ Whether this hypothetical weed would be as prickly as its factual counterpart is unknown. Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles can also occur all over the plant – on the stem and on the flat parts of the leaves. These prickles are an adaptation that protects the plant from being eaten by herbivores. Typically, an involucre with a clasping shape similar to a cup or urn subtends each of a thistle’s flowerheads.
