“Why is 6 afraid of 7?”/“Because 7 8 9.”

A children’s number riddle is:

Q: Why is 6 afraid of 7?
A: Because 7 8 (ate) 9.

The joke has been cited in print since at least 1986. “Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 is a registered 6 offender” is a related riddle.

“6 was afraid of 7 because 7, 8, 9, but why did 7 eat 9?”/“Because you’re supposed to eat 3 squared meals a day” is a joke based in this one.
