Jokes about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center are often in questionable taste, but a frequent joke is told about the American rock band 311 (from Omaha, Nebraska):

The joke has been cited in print since at least 2009 and was popularized by comedian Neil Hamburger.

311 (pronounced “three-eleven”) is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson (who would later be replaced by Tim Mahoney), bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills. and drummer Chad Sexton. In 1992, Doug “SA” Martinez joined to sing and provide turntables for 311’s later albums, rounding out the current line-up. The band’s name originates from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, Nebraska, after the original guitarist for the band was arrested for streaking.

Reviewing stand-up comedy isn’t normally part of The Spin’s job description, but given the slew of shows canceled by last weekend’s whiteout, we were forced to improvise. So we headed over to The End Monday night to catch Neil Hamburger.

While Hamburger’s set was rife with updated material, he didn’t shy away from playing the hits, including his litany of jokes about Colonel Sanders, Madonna, Smashmouth, Nickelback and our new favorite: “What’s worse than 9/11? 311.”
