“What would you find on a haunted beach?”/“A sand witch.”

The word “sandwich” is often spelled “sand witch”—especially around Halloween. “A sand witch—a pretty girl in bathing costume” was printed in many newspapers in May 1883. “Why is a sorceress at the beach like a school lunch? Because she is a sand witch (sandwich)” was printed in 1947. “BATHING BEAUTY. A sand witch” was published in Leonard L. Levinson’s “Webster’s Unafraid Dictionary” in 1969.

A 1996 Halloween joke list included:

Q: What would you find on a haunted beach?
A: A sand witch.

“I asked my caddie for a sand wedge” is a golf “sandwich” joke. “Why does no one starve in a desert? Because of all the sand which is there” is a desert “sandwich” joke.
