UT hopes to draw donors with its new ‘We’re Texas’ slogan

AUSTIN (AP) - It’s a praise-winning phrase and they’re hoping it pays.

“We’re Texas” is the newly unveiled slogan of the University of Texas’ new billion-dollar capital campaign.

“I like it,” said UT system regent Rita Clements of Dallas. “It’s snappy.”

UT officials said they hope the slogan revealed Friday will draw on Texans’ pride in the flagship university to attract generous donors.

“The University of Texas is not called to be average. We are called to greatness,” said Roy Spence, a 1971 alumnus and president of GSD&M, the ad agency that developed the slogan free of charge. “‘We’re Texas’ is a call to arms and a call to action.”

Spence said the agency examined UT’s purpose and values for a year to come up with it.

Some Background to the We’re Texas! campaign

The University of Texas at Austin We?re Texas! campaign began in 1997 with a goal of $1 billion by 2004. It has long since passed that mark and as of 4/30/2003 has accumulated $1.325 billion. The uses for the money include: professorships, scholarships, programs(pretty vague), new construction, and building renovations. Those donating cash, cash equivalents or other gifts to UT-Austin can designate their use, for example one can donate to the Engineering Department for an Endowment for a Professor.
