“Three great inventions: fire, the wheel and central banking”

American humorist Will Rogers (1879-1935) is often credited with the jocular saying:

“There have been three great inventions since the beginning of time: fire, the wheel, and central banking.”

However, the quotation has not been been found in print before the 1960s.

A GLANCE AT HISTORY It is reported that on one occasion Will Rogers said: “There have been three great inventions since the beginning of time: fire, the wheel, and central banking.” He may have been kidding when he said this, for it is doubtful if central banking belongs in such exalted company.

When Will Rogers, the American humorist, said, ‘There have been three great inventions since the beginning of time: fire, the wheel, and central banking’, it may have been mere journalistic hyperbole, but like all hyperboles it contained an element of truth.
