“The 5 second rule does not apply when you have a 2 second dog”

A “5-second rule” is an unscientific rule that food dropped on the floor can be eaten if picked up within five seconds. “The 5 second rule for food dropped on the ground does not work if you have a 2 second dog” is a jocular one-line saying that has been printed on many images. The saying means that the dog beats the human to the dropped food.

“The ‘5 second rule’ is of no use against a ‘3 second dog’...” was posted on Twitter on September 3, 2012. “The 5 second rule for food dropped on the ground does not work if you have a 2 second dog” was posted on Twitter on November 14, 2013.

MOST people would have heard of the three second rule - if you pick up food from the floor before three seconds has passed, then it’s safe to eat. According to my favourite scientist, Karl Kruszelnicki, this rule is a myth, but I really liked the comment I read recently: “There’s no such thing as a three second rule if you have a two second dog!”
