“Respect existence or expect resistance”

"Respect existence or expect resistance” has been printed on signs, banners and graffiti; it was a popular slogan of 2011’s Occupy movement and was also used in Egypt’s 2011 “Arab Spring” revolution. The “respect existence or expect resistance” slogan has been cited in print since at least 2010 and is of unknown authorship.

“Respect existence or expect resistance” has been often printed over or with an anarchist symbol.

The words “You Are Beautiful” are stenciled on a wall on a side street of Tahrir Square a short walk from the site of some of the bloodiest street battles of February, while the words “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance” are painted elsewhere.
