Now Spying on Americans (National Security Agency or NSA nickname)

The National Security Agency was formed in 1962 to improve foreign intelligence within the United States government. The NSA’s intelligence gathering is limited to foreign communications, but in 2013 it was leaked that the NSA had been spying on Americans in the United States.

In 2013, American technical contractor Edward Snowden made international news when he told The Guardian and the Washington Post about the NSA’s secret PRISM surveillance program; Snowden said that it was very easy to spy on anyone—Americans as well as foreigners. The NSA had been nicknamed “National Spying Agency” in 2006, and the spying scandal helped repopularize the nickname on June 6 and June 8, 2013. The NSA was nicknamed “Nefarious Spying Agency” on June 6, 2013 and “Neocon Spying Agency” (by the influential libertarian website LewRockwell.com) on June 15th. The NSA had been nicknamed the “National Socialist Agency” since at least 2006, but this other nickname (as well as “National Socialist Administration”) came into greater use after the June 2013 NSA newspaper stories. “Not Serving Americans/Anyone” also became popular in June 2013.

The NSA nickname of “Now Spying on Americans” has been cited in print since at least 2005—before the 2013 scandal. The nickname was printed on T-shirts in 2006.

The NSA has also been nicknamed “Never Say Anything” (cited in print since at least 1961), “No Such Agency” (cited in print since at least 1982) and “National Snoops’ Agency” (cited in print in 2013).

Wikipedia: National Security Agency
The National Security Agency (NSA) is a cryptologic intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the collection and analysis of foreign communications and foreign signals intelligence, monitoring the activity and communications of United States citizens, as well as protecting U.S. government communications and information systems, which involves information security and cryptanalysis/cryptography.

The NSA is directed by at least a lieutenant general or Vice Admiral. NSA is a key component of the U.S. Intelligence Community, which is headed by the Director of National Intelligence. The Central Security Service is a co-located agency created to coordinate intelligence activities and co-operation between NSA and other U.S. military cryptanalysis agencies. The Director of the National Security Agency serves as the Commander of the United States Cyber Command and Chief of the Central Security Service.

By law, NSA’s intelligence gathering is limited to foreign communications, although there have been some incidents involving domestic collection, including the NSA warrantless surveillance controversy.

NSA stands for Now Spying (on) Americans
This whole news story about Bush giving NSA permission to spy within U.S. borders without warrants is threatening to make my head asplode. What about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or the 4th Amendment to the Constitution?
