“I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way” (joke)

American comedian Jon Stewart said on The Jon Stewart Show:

“I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.”

It’s not known when Stewart first said it, but it was quoted in the Pittsburgh (PA) Post-Gazette on December 8, 1994. The joke quickly became popular and has been included in many collections of Thanksgiving sayings.

“We’re having a traditional Thanksgiving. Invite neighbors to dinner, murder them, take their land” is another form of the joke.
