“Forget love—I’d rather fall in chocolate”

"Forget love—I’d rather fall in chocolate” (or “Forget love—I want to fall in chocolate") is a popular saying around Valentine’s Day. The saying is usually given as “anonymous” or “author unknown,” but has been attributed since 2007 to “Sandra J. Dykes” or comedienne “Sandra Dyke.”

The saying appears to have started as a bumper sticker in 1994: “Forget love. I want to fall in Chocolate.”

De la coleccion “Fall in Chocolate” por Victoria Smith

Dark and sweet
I run my tongue
across its satin surface,
slippery and smooth.
It yields to my kiss
an exquisite taste on my lips.
Slowly, so slowly
I savor the moment
as it melts in my mouth,
a creamy surrender
to forbidden passion.
Forget love ...
fall in chocolate.

I’m the one who made that remark, I made it while working at Michelle’s (A now no-longer-in-business chocolate shoppe) in Colorado Springs.  An older man came in to buy chocolates for his wife, and we got into a conversation about love, and he asked me if I’d ever fallen in love when I said, “Love?!  Forget love!  I’d rather fall in chocolate.”

He wanted to know if he could quote me on that, so I told him yes, and I had no idea that it was so well loved until about 6 or 7 years ago.

By the way, I am not a comedienne named Sandra Dyke (I don’t know who that is!), so please don’t confuse me with that person.

Thanks!

PS - I made my remark in the early 1980’s, so it’s older than you think.  *smile*
