“Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti” (Italian actress Sophia Loren)

Italian actress and sex symbol Sophia Loren was profiled in Life magazine on August 11, 1961:

“She eats everything in sight, washed down with red wine, and when teased about her appetite narrows her eyes in her best temptress look, swivels her shoulders provocatively and says in a Mae West voice, ‘Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti.’”

“Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti” became a memorable food quotation that has been printed on many images.

When the New York (NY) Times asked Loren in 2015 if she said the quote, she replied:

Non è vero! It’s not true! It’s such a silly thing. I owe it to spaghetti, no, no. Completely made up.”

Encouraged to enroll in acting lessons after entering a beauty pageant, Loren began her film career in 1950 at age 15. Notable film appearances around this time include The Pride and the Passion, Houseboat, and It Started in Naples.

I suppose I should never have trusted Sophia Loren when she was quoted in a magazine article as saying, “All I am I owe to spaghetti.” Just by looking at her I would never have thought that. Good posture? Maybe. A new baby? Possibly. A 16th of an inch padding? Oh, c’mon. But spaghetti?
