“Eat, drink and be scary”

“Eat, drink, and be merry” is a biblical saying. “Eat, drink and be scary” has been printed on many images and is a popular saying around Halloween.

“Let us eat, drink, and be scary” was published in a poem in the Chicago (IL) Daily Tribune on April 2, 1949. Newspaper advertisements for Dairy Queen restaurants in 1969 and 1970 used “Eat, drink and be SCARY.”

Behind a flickering Victorian gas lamp on a Greenwich Village side street, Dr. Jekyll is concocting another mad brew. Skeletal remains hang from the ceiling, eyes in an oil painting roll left to right, and a coat of armor rattles menacingly. This macabre laboratory is actually the front room of New York’s Jekyll and Hyde pub, where the spirits are not just in bottles.
