“Cop” (a police officer) has had several backronyms (back acronyms), such as “Constable On Patrol.” Some people believe that the police conduct criminality themselves, and “cop” for them stands for “Criminal On Patrol.”
     
“Criminal On Patrol” was posted on the newsgroup bit.listserv.uus-l on August 5, 1993, but the backronym wasn’t popular in the 1990s. “If you are righteous + a police officer, I salute. If not, you’re a cop: criminal on patrol” was posted on Twitter on February 15, 2010.

Seems to me that COPS have a much higher crime rate then the general public!
