Barstro (bar + bistro)

When Bar Artisanal opened in Tribeca (268 West Broadway, between Avenue Of The Americas & Lispenard Street) in 2009, owner Terrance Brennan remarked that it was a “barstro”—a cross between a bistro and a bar. Bar Artisanal has since closed.

Woody McGee’s Barstro opened in 2011 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The term “barstro” remains little-used.

CAN’T WE JUST CALL IT A RESTAURANT? From a press release about Terrance Brennan’s takeover of the failed Trigo space, which will reopen as Bar Artisanal on Tuesday, April 21: “Concept: Bar Artisanal is a Barstro--a cross between a bistro and a bar...Bar Artisanal will feature inventive cocktails....an accessible wine list; and dishes that are $20 and under.”
