Bankism (Central Bankism)

“Central bankism” is the theory that the economy is run by the operations of a central bank (or central banks). The term was popularized by the article “Central Bankism: A New Religion”  in The London Review of Books in 1996, written by American political scientist and historian Edward Lufttwak.

“Bankism” was popularized in 2014-15 by Gerald Celente of the Trends Research Institute. “Gerald Celente: Capitalism is Dead, ‘Bankism’ Reigns Supreme” was the title of a USA Watchdog interview on November 18, 2014. Gerald Celente - Trends In The News - “Top Trend: Bankism” - (12/11/14) was the title of a YouTube video by the Trends Journal. Celente explained in January 2015:

“Bankism is the idea that big banks are in control of the economy and not the free markets, trade, product development or business.”

“One of the trends for 2015 is ‘bankism,’ not capitalism. Capitalism is dead. This isn’t capitalism. Four words killed it, and they are ‘too big to fail.’ Quantitative easing hasn’t stopped. They keep doing it, they just change the game.

@KeiserReport, @geraldcelente has been using the term #Bankism since at least the end of 14. Was his term inspiration or just coincidence?

How ‘Bankism’ Makes Slaves of Millennials and Could Ruin the Economy in 2015
Juliette Fairley Follow Jan 23, 2015 10:45 AM EST
NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Capitalism is on its way out and “bankism” is fast becoming the dominant global economic system, the Trends Research Institute warns.

“Bankism is the idea that big banks are in control of the economy and not the free markets, trade, product development or business,” says Gerald Celente, founder and director of TRI, a Kingston, N.Y., company that consults with governments and businesses.

Younger generations will be among the hardest hit by bankism due to student loans.
