New York City’s annual Architecture Week became an annual architecture and design month in October 2011 with the first “Archtober” (architecture + October), pronounced “ark-tober.” The annual month-long event of architecture activities and exhibitions was initiated by the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter and the Center of Architecture.
Archtober (ärk’tōbər) is New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, the fifth annual month-long festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during the month of October.
Archtober presents special tours, lectures, films and exhibitions that focus on the importance of architecture and design in everyday life. The many participating organizations aim to raise awareness of the important role of design in our city and to build a lasting civic and international recognition of the richness of New York’s built environment.

AIA New York’s annual weekly festival of architecture and design has grown into a month-long cultural smorgasbord, Archtober. Offerings include a symposium on Latin American architecture at the Bronx Museum, a talk held on the High Line about the elevated railway’s restoration, a Philip Johnson–inspired play at the Dixon Theater, and a bevy of workshops, exhibitions, and film screenings.

For the fifth year in a row, the Center for Architecture and the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter are ushering in fall with a monthlong celebration of architecture and design. Dubbed Archtober, the New York City–based festival features more than 100 events ranging from workshops and panel discussions to its marquee Building of the Day program, which allows members of the public to get daily behind-the-scenes tours of new and historic landmarks, often led by the architects themselves.
