America’s Sweethearts (Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders nickname)

The Dallas Cowboys football team is popular, but the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders also have a large following. The football team has had cheerleaders since 1969, but the 1972 season is considered the real birth of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (as conceived by the team’s publicity-minded president and general manager, Tex Schramm).

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have been nicknamed “America’s Sweethearts” since at least 1991 and 1992 (the name’s trademark dates).

Wikipedia: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders
The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) are the National Football League cheerleading squad representing the Dallas Cowboys.
(...)
1960s
n 1969, it was decided that the cheerleading squad needed a new image and the decision was made to drop the male cheerleaders and select an all female squad from the local high school cheerleaders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. At this time the name of the squad was changed from “CowBelles and Beaux” to the “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders”.

1970s
Preparing for the 1970 season, Schramm decided to change the cheerleaders image to boost attendance. At first the main change was to create an all female squad and change the uniforms and style of cheerleading routines to be more towards dance and less like high school or college cheerleading squads. The ten local high school cheerleaders that were selected for the 1970 season were also involved in the task of totally redesigning the uniforms and creating new dance style cheer routines under Dee Brock’s direction and with the help of the current choreographer. In 1971, the qualification rules changed to allow not only local female cheerleaders to compete for a spot on the squad, but also high school drill team officers. Then in 1972, Texie Waterman, a New York choreographer, was recruited and charged with auditioning and training an entirely new female squad which would all be over 18 years of age, searching for attractive appearance, athletic ability, and raw talent as performers. And since the 1972 squad consisted of adults, this allowed the possibility of again redesigning the uniforms to introduce the more revealing sexier look closer to what we see today. This modified squad first appeared on the sidelines during the 1972 NFL Season.

10 April 1993, Dallas (TX) Morning News, “Field of Dreams” by Melissa Morrison:
About 400 young women are lined up outside Texas Stadium to audition for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders—America’s Sweethearts who support America’s Team and who performed at the Super Bowl for a TV audience of 1 billion, who have had two top-rated TV movies made about them, who are plucked from college or typically low-paying jobs to be photographed, admired and siphoned through an American Dream Machine for a year.

CNN SUNDAY MORNING
Interview With Brandi Nace, Vonciel Baker
Aired September 15, 2002 - 09:15 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
MILES O’BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: In 1972, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders stepped onto the sidelines in their short shorts and their low-cut blouses and those little white boots, and the rest is, well, sideline history. I guess you could say they’re as popular as ever and they’re still kicking after now 30 years. Hard to believe.
Today, the cheerleaders will celebrate this anniversary—where else—at Texas Stadium. Joining us to talk about is Vonciel Baker. She is screen right. And then screen left is Brandi Nace, and I’m going to ask our viewers to guess which one was on the original squad
(...)
NACE: I think because we were the first professional cheerleaders, and we represent 30 years of excellence. And every girls that’s been in these shoes has really tried hard to uphold the standards that the first set has set out for us, and we’re just America’s team, America’s sweethearts, and we’re trying to carry on the tradition of being wholesome and number one.
