“A guy walks into a bar...” is a typical form of what has been called the “bar joke.” “A Roman walks into a bar and orders a Martinus...” is one such popular bar joke. The bartender asks if he really wants a “Martini,” but the Roman—using correct Latin—replies, “If I wanted a double, I would have asked for it.”
The joke originated with the Canadian comedy duo of Wayne and Shuster, who performed the sketch Rinse the Blood Off My Toga on television’s The Ed Sullivan Show in May 1958:
FLAVIUS: Hi, Claud. What’s new?
CLAUDIUS: Nothin much. What’ll ya have?
FLAVIUS: Give me a Martinus.
CLAUDIUS: Don’t you mean a “Mar-ti-NI”?
FLAVIUS: If I want two, I’ll ask for it.
“A Roman walks into a bar, holds up two fingers and says, ‘Five beers, please!’” is another bar joke involving a Roman.
Wikipedia: Wayne and Shuster
Wayne and Shuster were a Canadian comedy duo formed by Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster. They were active professionally from the early 1940s until the late 1980s.
Wayne (born Louis Weingarten, May 28, 1918 – July 18, 1990) and Shuster (September 5, 1916 – January 13, 2002) were well known in Canada, and were Ed Sullivan’s most frequently recurring guests, appearing a record 67 times on his show.

Wayne and Shuster
Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster: CBC Radio and television comediennes, known to Canadian and American audiences for their 67 appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” on CBS television, and having their own long running series on CBC television in Canada.
One of my favorite lines from W&S is from “Rinse the Blood of my Toga”, where the hero, Flavius Maximus, the famous Private Roman Eye goes into a bar and orders a “Martinus”. The bartender asks him, “Don’t you mean “Martini?” Flavius shoots back “If I wanted two, I’d ask for them!”
An interesting note is Frank’s cousin, Joe Shuster, is the co-creator of Superman!!
